How to use the pomodoro timer

What it calculates and when to use it

A focus timer for the Pomodoro technique: work in a focused block, take a short break, and after every few blocks take a longer one. It chimes when a block ends and counts how many focus blocks you finish today.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Set the focus, short break and long break lengths.
  2. Choose how many focus blocks come before a long break.
  3. Press Start and work until the chime.
  4. Take the break, then start the next block.

What each input means

  • Focus – Length of a work block. Starts at 25 minutes.
  • Short break – Starts at 5 minutes.
  • Long break – Starts at 15 minutes.
  • Long break after – Number of focus blocks before a long break. Starts at 4.
  • Chime – Plays three short tones when a block ends.
  • Start automatically – Starts the next block without a click.

How to read the results

  • Timer – Time left in the current block, with a progress bar.
  • Focus blocks today – Completed focus blocks on this device today.
  • Focus time today – Blocks completed × focus length.

The formula

A long break follows every Nth focus block, where N is the “long break after” setting; every other focus block is followed by a short break.

A worked example

With the defaults, four 25-minute focus blocks with 5-minute breaks between them take 1 hour 55 minutes, followed by a 15-minute long break: 100 minutes of focused work in just over two hours.

Assumptions and limits

  • The end time of each block is fixed when you press Start, so the timer stays accurate even if the browser slows it down in a background tab.
  • Session counts are stored in this browser only.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping breaks: they are part of the method and help you keep going.
  • Making blocks too long at first. Start with 25 minutes and adjust.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pomodoro technique?

A time-management method that splits work into focused intervals, traditionally 25 minutes, separated by short breaks, with a longer break after four intervals.

Does the timer work in a background tab?

Yes. The end time is fixed, so the clock catches up when you return, and the chime plays if the tab is allowed to play sound.

Can I change the lengths?

Yes. Any length from 1 to 240 minutes works for each block.

Keep this tab open while the timer runs. Browsers slow down timers in background tabs, but the end time is fixed, so the clock catches up when you return.
