About the expense tracker

Part of SmartCalcy’s productivity tools. It runs in your browser with no account, uses your own currency and units (change them at the top of the page), and gives estimates for information only, so check official guidance before you rely on a result.

How to use the expense tracker

What it calculates and when to use it

A private spending log. Record each purchase with a category and a note, see the month’s total against a budget and where the money went, and export everything to CSV.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Enter an amount, a date, a category and an optional note, then press Add.
  2. Set a monthly budget if you want to track what is left.
  3. Choose a month to see its total and breakdown.
  4. Export CSV to open the data in a spreadsheet.

What each input means

  • Amount – In your currency, which follows the country chosen at the top of the page.
  • Date – Defaults to today.
  • Category – Food, transport, home and bills, shopping, health, eating out and fun, or other.
  • Monthly budget – Optional.

How to read the results

  • Spent this month – Total of the month’s entries, with the budget left or the amount over.
  • By category – Each category’s total, largest first.
  • Entries – The month’s purchases, newest first.

The formula

Month total = sum of the month’s entries. Left = budget − total. Used = total ÷ budget.

A worked example

With the example entries (a weekly shop of 42.50 and a bus pass top-up of 12) and a budget of 800, the month total is 54.50, leaving 745.50, or 7% of the budget used.

Assumptions and limits

  • All amounts are in one currency; changing country does not convert past entries.
  • Data stays in this browser until you clear it or press Reset.

Common mistakes

  • Logging in two currencies: keep one per tracker or convert first.
  • Forgetting to export before clearing browser data.
