How to use the mental maths speed test

What it calculates and when to use it

A timed mental arithmetic test: answer as many questions as you can in 30, 60 or 120 seconds. Each answer is accepted as soon as it is right, so you never need to press Enter. Choose addition, subtraction, times tables, division or a mix, at three levels.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Choose the type of question, the level and the time.
  2. Press Start.
  3. Type each answer; the next question appears as soon as it is right.
  4. Press Enter to give up on a question or Skip to move on. Share your score at the end.

What each input means

  • Questions – Addition, Subtraction, Times tables, Division or Mixed.
  • Level – Easy: numbers up to 10. Medium: up to 50 and tables to 12. Hard: up to 200 and tables to 20.
  • Time – 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.

How to read the results

  • Correct – Questions answered correctly before the time ran out.
  • Per minute – Correct answers scaled to one minute.
  • Accuracy – Correct answers as a percentage of the questions you tried.
  • Best scores – Your best for each test on this device.

The formula

Rate per minute = correct answers ÷ seconds × 60. Accuracy = correct ÷ (correct + wrong + skipped) × 100.

A worked example

Forty correct answers in a 60-second Medium mixed test, with two skipped, is 40 a minute with 95% accuracy.

Assumptions and limits

  • Subtraction answers are never negative and division always comes out exactly.
  • Best scores are kept separately for each type, level and time.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing Enter after every answer: it is not needed, and Enter skips the question.
  • Comparing scores from different levels or times.
