How to use the daily maths puzzle
What it calculates and when to use it
Four new maths puzzles every day, the same for everyone on each UTC date: Easy, Medium and Hard order-of-operations puzzles and an Expert target-number game, with a streak.
How to use it, step by step
- Choose a level.
- Work out the expression, or build one that hits the target.
- Type your answer and press Check.
- Come back tomorrow to keep your streak.
What each input means
- Level – Easy (2 steps), Medium, Hard (powers and brackets) or Expert (target number).
- Answer – A whole number, or an expression for Expert.
How to read the results
- Result – Correct or not; for Expert, how far your expression is from the target.
- Working – Step-by-step solution, or one way to reach the target.
- Streak – Days in a row with at least one puzzle solved.
The formula
Order of operations: brackets, then powers, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction. Expert targets are built from the day’s numbers with whole-number steps, so an exact answer always exists.
A worked example
For 4 + 3 × 2, multiply first: 3 × 2 = 6, then 4 + 6 = 10, not 14.
Assumptions and limits
- Puzzles change at 00:00 UTC.
- Your streak is stored on this device.
Common mistakes
- Working strictly left to right instead of following the order of operations.
- Using a number card more often than it appears in Expert.
