How to use the spin the wheel

What it calculates and when to use it

A spinning wheel that picks a random option for you. Type names or choices, one per line, and spin. Every option has exactly the same chance, chosen with your browser’s secure random number generator.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Type the options, one per line (2 to 100).
  2. Press Spin or tap the wheel.
  3. Read the winner, and share it if you like.
  4. Turn on “Remove the winner” to draw several names in turn.

What each input means

  • Options – One per line. Use Shuffle or Sort to reorder them.
  • Remove the winner – Takes each winner off the wheel after the spin.

How to read the results

  • The wheel picked – The option under the pointer when the wheel stops.
  • Results so far – Your last 50 results.

The formula

The winner is chosen first with a secure random number (each of n options has a 1 in n chance); the wheel then spins to land on it.

A worked example

With 8 names, each name has a 1 in 8 (12.5%) chance. With “Remove the winner” on, the second spin is 1 in 7.

Assumptions and limits

  • Options are saved in this browser for next time.
  • Duplicate lines count as separate options, so a repeated name has a higher chance.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving blank or duplicate lines in the list by accident.
  • Forgetting to turn off “Remove the winner” when you want to spin the same list again.
