How to use the typing speed test
What it calculates and when to use it
A typing test that measures your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy. Type common words in one of eight languages, or your own text, for 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
How to use it, step by step
- Choose the time and the text.
- Click in the box and start typing; the timer starts with your first key.
- Press Space after each word.
- When the time is up, read your WPM and accuracy and share your score.
What each input means
- Time – 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
- Text – Common words in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch or Indonesian, or your own text.
How to read the results
- WPM – Words per minute, counting only correctly typed words.
- Accuracy – Key presses that matched the text, as a percentage.
- Best scores – Per language and length, on this device.
The formula
WPM = (characters in correct words, including the spaces after them) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. A “word” is counted as 5 characters, the standard used by typing tests.
A worked example
Typing 230 correct characters in one minute gives 230 ÷ 5 = 46 WPM.
Assumptions and limits
- A mistyped word counts as wrong even if you correct the next one.
- Your best scores are stored in this browser.
Common mistakes
- Looking at the keyboard: keep your eyes on the words.
- Rushing: accuracy matters more than speed when you are learning.
