How to use the uk state pension calculator

What it calculates and when to use it

Estimates your UK new State Pension from your qualifying National Insurance years and shows your State Pension age.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Enter your birth year.
  2. Enter the qualifying years you have and how many more you will add.
  3. Optionally enter years you might defer claiming.

What each input means

  • Qualifying years – Years in which you paid or were credited with National Insurance. You need 10 for any pension and 35 for the full amount.
  • Defer – Deferring increases the pension by about 5.8% a year.

How to read the results

  • State Pension – Yearly, monthly and weekly estimates.
  • State Pension age – An approximate age. Confirm yours on GOV.UK.

The formula

Pension = full new State Pension × qualifying years ÷ 35, with a maximum of 35 years and a minimum of 10 years. The full rate is 241.30 a week from April 2026.

A worked example

With 35 qualifying years the full rate of 241.30 a week gives 12,548 a year, or 1,045.63 a month. A person born in 1975 reaches State Pension age at 67.

Assumptions and limits

  • New State Pension rules for people reaching State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016.
  • Any protected payment from the old scheme is ignored.
  • The age shown is an approximation; the Pensions Act timetable is phased by birth date.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you will receive the full amount with fewer than 35 years.
  • Not checking gaps in your record, which you may be able to fill.
