How to use the what is my user agent?
What it calculates and when to use it
Shows your browser’s user agent string and explains what it says: the browser and version, rendering engine, operating system and device type. You can paste any other user agent string to decode it. Useful for support requests, testing and checking what a site sees.
How to use it, step by step
- Open the page to see your own user agent.
- Read the browser, engine, operating system and device type.
- To decode another string, paste it into the box.
- Press “Copy result” to copy the user agent.
What each input means
- Decode a different user agent – Optional. Paste a string from a log or a bug report. Leave empty for your own.
How to read the results
- User agent string – The full text your browser sends with each request.
- What it says – Browser, engine, operating system and device type.
- Client hints – Brands, mobile flag and platform, shown when your browser supports them.
The formula
No calculation. The string is matched against patterns for known browsers and systems. Edge, Opera and Samsung Internet contain “Chrome” in their strings, so they are checked first.
A worked example
A string containing Edg/141 and Windows NT 10.0 is decoded as Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 or 11, using the Blink engine.
Assumptions and limits
- Browsers reduce or freeze parts of the string for privacy, so Windows 11 still reports Windows 10 and macOS versions can look old.
- Strings can be changed by the user, so they are not proof of what a device is.
Common mistakes
- Using the user agent alone to decide features. Test for the feature instead.
- Believing the version of macOS or Windows shown, which browsers freeze.
- Treating a bot string as human traffic.
Frequently asked questions

A text string your browser sends to every website to identify itself, its engine and your operating system.
Can I change my user agent?
Yes. Developer tools and extensions can override it.
Why does Chrome say Safari and Mozilla?
For historic compatibility. Browsers kept old names so sites would still serve them modern pages.
Why does Windows 11 show as Windows 10?
Browsers keep the version token NT 10.0 for both.
