IP WHOIS lookup
WHOIS lookup for an IP address, showing the registered network range, owner, country and abuse contact from the regional internet registry.
Registry data comes from RIPEstat. Records outside the RIPE region may be shorter. The address is sent to RIPEstat when you press the button.
About the ip whois lookup
WHOIS lookup for an IP address, showing the registered network range, owner, country and abuse contact from the regional internet registry.
Part of SmartCalcy’s data & networking tools. It runs in your browser with no account, uses your own currency and units (change them at the top of the page), and gives estimates for information only, so check official guidance before you rely on a result.
How to use the ip whois lookup
What it calculates and when to use it
Shows the registry record for an IP address: the network range it belongs to, the network name, the organisation that holds it, the country and where to send abuse reports. It reads the public records kept by the regional internet registries.
How to use it, step by step
- Enter an IPv4 or IPv6 address.
- Press “Run WHOIS”.
- Read the network name, range and description at the top.
- Scroll the record cards for the owner, country and abuse contact.
What each input means
- IP address – The address you want to identify, for example 193.0.6.139.
How to read the results
- Network name and range – The block of addresses the lookup falls inside, for example 193.0.0.0 – 193.0.7.255.
- Records – The registry fields: owner, description, country, contacts, status and last change.
- Registry – Which regional registry holds the data, such as RIPE, ARIN or APNIC.
The formula
No calculation. A WHOIS record is a database entry kept by one of five regional internet registries (RIPE NCC, ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC and AFRINIC). Each address block is allocated to an organisation, which may split it among customers.
A worked example
A lookup of 193.0.6.139 returns the block 193.0.0.0 – 193.0.7.255 named RIPE-NCC, held by the RIPE Network Coordination Centre.
Assumptions and limits
- Data is requested from the RIPEstat service when you press the button. Records outside the RIPE region can be shorter or less detailed.
- Personal contact details are often hidden or replaced with role addresses to protect privacy.
Common mistakes
- Reporting abuse to the registry instead of the abuse contact listed in the record.
- Assuming the holder of a large block is the end user. Providers sub-allocate blocks to customers.
- Pasting a domain name. Use a domain WHOIS tool for domains, and this tool for IP addresses.
Frequently asked questions
What is WHOIS?
A public directory of who holds internet resources such as IP address blocks, AS numbers and domain names.
Can I find the person behind an IP address?
No. WHOIS shows the provider or organisation that holds the block, not an individual.
What is an abuse contact?
An email address the network operator asks people to use to report spam, attacks or other misuse from its addresses.
Why is the result short for some addresses?
Different registries publish different fields, and some data is held back for privacy.
