How to use the qr code generator

What it calculates and when to use it

Makes free QR codes for links, text, Wi-Fi networks, email, phone calls, text messages and contact cards, with your choice of colours, size and error correction. Codes never expire and are not tracked.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Choose what the code contains: link, text, Wi-Fi, email, phone, SMS or contact.
  2. Fill in the details.
  3. Choose a size, error correction and colours.
  4. Download as PNG for screens or SVG for print.

What each input means

  • Type – Link, text, Wi-Fi, email, phone, SMS or contact (vCard).
  • Size – 256 to 2,048 pixels.
  • Error correction – Low 7%, medium 15%, quartile 25% or high 30% of the code can be damaged and still scan.
  • Colours – A dark code on a light background scans best.

How to read the results

  • QR code – A preview with PNG and SVG downloads.
  • Version – The code’s grid size; longer content needs a bigger grid.

The formula

Content is encoded as UTF-8 bytes. The smallest QR version that fits the content at the chosen error-correction level is used, with a four-module quiet zone around it.

A worked example

The default link https://smartcalcy.net at medium error correction fits in a version 2 code, a 25 × 25 grid.

Assumptions and limits

  • Wi-Fi codes use the WIFI: format read by most phone cameras.
  • Static codes cannot be edited after printing; make a new one if the content changes.

Common mistakes

  • Using light codes on dark backgrounds, which some scanners cannot read.
  • Printing a code too small: aim for at least 2 × 2 cm (about 1 in).
  • Not testing with more than one phone before printing.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. The content is stored in the code itself, so it works forever.

Are scans tracked?

No. There is no redirect or tracking.

Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code?

Yes. Choose Wi-Fi and enter the network name, security type and password.

PNG or SVG?

PNG for screens and documents, SVG for print at any size.
