How to use the holiday countdowns

What it calculates and when to use it

Live countdowns to the year’s big holidays and festivals around the world, including Christmas, New Year, Ramadan, Eid, Diwali, Chinese New Year, Easter, Hanukkah, Holi, Black Friday and Mother’s Day, with the dates for the next three years.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Choose a holiday.
  2. Watch the live countdown in days, hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. See the date and day of the week, and the dates for the next few years.
  4. Share the countdown, or open another one from the list.

What each input means

  • Count down to – The holiday or festival.

How to read the results

  • Countdown – Time left to midnight at the start of the day, in your time zone.
  • Sleeps – Nights left before the day.
  • Next dates – The next three dates and how many days away they are.

The formula

Fixed dates (such as 25 December) repeat each year. Easter uses the Gregorian computus; Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. Islamic dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, and Diwali, Holi, Hanukkah and Chinese New Year follow their lunisolar calendars.

A worked example

On 1 December, Christmas is 24 days or 24 sleeps away, three weeks and three days.

Assumptions and limits

  • Countdowns run to midnight in your device’s time zone.
  • Dates of Ramadan and Eid depend on the moon sighting and can differ by a day between countries.

Common mistakes

  • Planning travel on an expected Islamic date without checking the local announcement.
  • Confusing UK Mothering Sunday (three weeks before Easter) with Mother’s Day in May.
