How to use the discount calculator
What it calculates and when to use it
Finds the sale price after a percentage discount, or the percentage that was taken off an original price.
How to use it, step by step
- Choose sale price or percentage off.
- Enter the original price and either the discount or the sale price.
- Optionally enter sales tax to see the final price.
What each input means
- Original price – The price before the discount.
- Discount – The percentage off.
How to read the results
- Sale price – Original × (1 − discount).
- You save – Original price minus sale price.
The formula
Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Discount % = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.
A worked example
An 80 item at 25% off costs 60, saving 20.
Assumptions and limits
- A single discount. For several discounts use the stacked discounts calculator.
Common mistakes
- Adding two discounts together. Two 20% discounts give 36% off, not 40%.
